On Monday we celebrated Leon’s British citizenship. We thought what better way to do that than to have something that’s very British—a cream tea! We invited friends from OM and church. We also invited our neighbours, as we’ve tried to reach out to them and get to know them better.

Cream Tea – n. a typically British afternoon meal of tea served with scones, jams, and clotted cream.

I was feeling brave and made some scones. A cream tea consists of scones served with strawberry jam and clotted cream. Of course you have your scones with a cup of tea, too! Making scones wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I thought it was pretty easy. Until I found out that a number of our guests had unsuccessfully made them. Apparently, they can turn out like biscuits (American English = cookies) if not done right. :)

So we had our cream tea on Monday, since it was a bank holiday. I was kind of disappointed because a number of people had said they were away that day, but we still had a good turn out, and we had plenty of scones to go around.

Scones were a lot of fun to make. I think the trick to getting them to rise is only putting the egg wash on top of the scone instead of all over. The egg will otherwise keep the scone from rising!
