While we were on furlough, Leon and I experienced the best of hospitality. We stayed with a number of different people after getting married while we were raising support. I think we counted 15 or 16 different beds with in the first few weeks of our marriage!
During that time, I found the value of hospitality. Travelling around, it’s so nice to have a place to call home—a place to feel comfortable and welcome even though we’d be living out of suitcases. So many brothers and sisters in Christ opened their homes to us and gave us that place to call home. It meant so much to us.
When we got married, we had a vision for hospitality in our home. It’s been a blessing to finally “give back” to those who need a place to stay. My parents have come visit, as well as a couple of people who came to visit the OM team in Carlisle. It’s also humbling to open our home, just as it is… imperfections and all… to others, particularly strangers.
In my Bible reading today I learnt that “hospitality” literally means “a love for strangers” in the Greek. And when you combine that with the verse before which talks about love, I realise how multi-faceted hospitality really is! It is far more than just giving someone a place to lay their head at night.
