Thanksgiving will be different this year. There’s no denying that. I’m away from my own country and in a new culture. I’m not sure which is more strange about Thanksgiving this year–being away from family on a holiday that is focused on family, not having a day off in the middle of the week to honour thankfulness and spend time with family, or not going Christmas shopping (or having to work) in mass crowds the Friday after.
Either way, it’s different and an excellent opportunity for Leon and I to start our own traditions. For example, on Thursday we are instead celebrating the anniversary of our first date, which occurred on Thanksgiving last year (with myself in the US and Leon on OM’s ship, the Doulos in Singapore). We will be celebrating with a special dinner and a walk around the city centre to look at Christmas lights and other festivities there.
On Saturday Leon and I have the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving with other Americans who are on the OM team here. It will be lovely to spend all day together in a family-like atmosphere. I’m greatly looking forward to it!
This time of year always brings about my introspective self. What do I have to be thankful for? Where has God brought me from this time a year ago? I don’t know if I have answers to these questions yet. I am, however, (perhaps not so) subtly reminded by all the thankfulness Psalms I’ve been reading in my quiet times this week. Just as in years’ past, I have a lot to be thankful for this year.
“Oh, give thanks to the Lord!
Call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples!”
Psalm 105:1
