Simply Delicious Amish Cooking by Sherry Gore is a collection of recipes from the Amish community of Pinecraft, which is tucked away in Sarasota, Florida. Amongst all the delicious recipes are stories giving the reader a glimpse of life in the Amish community. The hundreds of recipes in the book range from cakes and desserts to soups and breads. There is even a recipe using alligator meat!
Also included in the book is a brief history of the Amish and Mennonites as well as a history of the Pinecraft community, where a number of Amish and Mennonite families go on vacation every year.
I’ll be honest—I’m excited to review a cookbook since I’ve developed a love of cooking over the past few years! I was also excited to learn a little more about the Amish.
Most of the recipes are just as the title of the book suggests: simple. Although I was slightly surprised and disappointed to find a number of the recipes include ingredients that are processed foods like Velveeta cheese and non-dairy whipped topping.
While there were too many recipes to try before writing this review, I did try a couple while we were still in the US: Tater Tot Casserole and Cappuccino Muffins. Both were fantastic!
On a side note: The ebook version of this book wasn’t formatted very well. The index was helpful for learning what was in the book, but I couldn’t get to the recipes easily. The colour plates mentioned in the book were also difficult to find.
Have you ever tried Amish cooking? What is your favourite recipe?
